Library classes are taught by the Librarian, Miss Melissa Smitley. 
Miss Smitley completed a Bachelors of Education, Library Science, K-12 from Clarion University. She is currently one of two elementary librarians serving the General McLane School District. Library lessons include learning how to use the library, such as instruction on the Dewey Decimal System or using the online catalog; locating, using, and evaluating information in books, the AR program, the Internet, and reference tools; types of literature; and literature appreciation.

Mrs. Kim Scully is the library aide at McKean Elementary School. 
Mrs. Scully is in the library half days and primarily in charge of preparing new books, shelving returned books, and helping with the day-to-day operations of the library as well as being available to help the students whatever the need.

The library is always seeking additional help in a variety of ways and at a variety of times. Parents are encouraged to visit and volunteer whenever possible. In addition to needing volunteers for special events, the library has many clerical tasks that need to be done and require many extra hours to complete. Helping to prepare bulletin boards or displays and straightening shelves are just two examples of the things a parent volunteer might do. Every class makes a regular weekly visit to the library (see schedule page) as well as individuals and small groups dropping in at any given time. Volunteers may also help the students find a book or work on research.

So whether you only have an hour or thirty minutes the library welcomes your help.  If you are able to come at a time when we have a scheduled visit from a class, then you could be here with the same group each week. You will have the pleasure of getting to know a group of children, and they will have all the advantages of a good relationship with a caring adult.
