Hours
Monday - Friday from 7:45 AM to 4:15 PM.
McKean Elementary Library is an "open-access" media center where students are welcome to use the library during the school day - with their classes, in small groups or individually - to check out and return materials, to read for pleasure or information, to hear stories, or research topics for reports, using a variety of resources. The Library Staff is available to help students with whatever needs they may have.
The "Reading Well" in the McKean Elementary School Library is a cozy and comfortable place where students can explore the wonders of reading! Students enjoy the comfortable surroundings of the reading well to either read a story on their own or enjoy a class time activity with the Librarian. Parents are encouraged to monitor what their child is reading and to read with their children at home.
Starting with Kindergarten, all classes come into the library once a week for 40 minutes. Please check your child's schedule to see on what day your child has library. During their class, students learn a new library skill and/or are read a new story before they check out their books.
New books are added to the collection each year, and are selected to appeal to a wide range of reading interests and levels. Books are also added to support the curriculum and for use with the Accelerated Reader Program. About 70 % of the collection are Accelerated Reader titles with accompanying quizzes. Students can find a wide assortment of interesting books within their own personal comfort zone of reading levels. Fiction and non-fiction as well as a reference section and magazine area give the students a wide selection from which to choose.
