Federal and State Financial Aid Programs Definitions
 
     
FAFSA Free Application for Federal Student Aid - Used to apply for federal aid, including grants, loans and work study. Most schools will also use this form to award non-federal aid. Can submit form AFTER January 1st. Save time and file electronically. Apply early to ensure aid is received from as many sources as possible, because deadlines for aid from the state, school and private sources tend to occur earlier!
     
PELL GRANT Financial assistance awarded by the federal government on the basis of need. The grant may be used toward tuition, room and board, or other educational costs. Requires no repayment. Awarded to student to be used at any eligible institution.
     
FSEOG (SUPPLEMNENTAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY GRANT)
Federal money distributed by college to undergraduate students with greater financial need.
     
FWS (COLLEGE WORK STUDY PROGRAM)
Federal money distributed by college to provide part-time jobs to students who need help paying college expenses. Work-study jobs are awarded to the student by the financial aid office.
     
FEDERAL
PERKINS LOAN
Loans funded by the federal government and awarded by the college. The lowest rate of interest charged in all loan programs. Repayment and interest begins six months after the student graduates, leaves school or drops below half-time student status.
     
STAFFORD LOAN Loan program in which eligible student borrow from a bank or other financial institution. The federal government pays the interest on the loan while the student is in school. Repayment and interest begins six months after the student graduates, leaves school or drops below half-time status.
     
PLUS LOAN Loan program (not need based) in which parents can borrow from a bank or other lender. Repayment of principal and interest begins within sixty days of loan disbursement.
