As a requirement for the FAMS program at General McLane, students must take a few electives.
The classes include:


(Course #650) .50 credit
Taught by Mrs. Rogers.
This course includes: introduction to manufacturing, principles of economics, history of manufacturing, manufacturing systems, team work and problem solving skills, manufacturing processes, measuring quality and careers in manufacturing.

Taught by Mr. Lowry.
Introduction to metals is the beginning building block to Production systems. This course offers the students the opportunity to use and develop new skills and talents in metal layout and fabrication. The students will participate in numerous skill developing activities, as well as problems solving activities in which they will invent solutions to given problems. The problem solving activities will provide students with the chance to practice and perfect their hand-on-skills. Along with the activities and problem-solving, students will be required to complete homework and writing activities that will be beneficial in the future.

Introduction to Wood Materials and Processes introduces students to the study of wood materials, tools and equipment. Students examine various aspects of wood manufacturing including safety, fabrication, assembly and finishing. Students study the organization of a manufacturing facility and participate in the productions of a custom and mass-produced wood product.

Taught by Mr. Roberts.
Students will explore contemporary issues through statistics and data analysis. Such issues as societal drug and alcohol use, mean family income, family size, etc. will be analyzed from a statistical approach. Students will conduct surveys, gather data and present results.

Taught by Mr. Kieffer.
This course introduces students to the world of robotics, by giving hands-on experience with manually and computer programmed robot trainers. Students will also develop basic skill in machining, processor language and programming of the Computer Numerical Control mill and lathe.

Taught by Mr. Kieffer.
This course is designed to develop students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The course exposes students to tools, materials and processes found in the technological systems of communication, manufacturing and construction. This course will also provide students with the opportunities to research, design, develop, build, test and evaluate solutions to technical problems.

(Course # 651) .50 credit
Taught by Mr. Lowry.
A summary course that challenges students to apply new knowledge and skills by working in teams to solve a variety of manufacturing case study problems. This course includes: problems in the manufacturing world, solving problems/ making decisions, case study analysis, computer simulations and FAMS summary.

open to senior FAMS members only

- Successful completion (minimum grade of “B”) of the sophomore and junior FAMS courses is a prerequisite to being considered for an optional noncredit paid summer internship with a local business. Interns will receive a pass/fail grade on their transcripts.

In order to graduate from the Academy students must earn a minimum grade of “B” in all FAMS courses. They will receive an Academy diploma at the graduation ceremony along with special recognition in the commencement program. In addition, their transcript will reflect successful completion of the FAMS program. The Academy diploma of FAMS graduates who complete the summer internship will indicate the internship completion.
